USFWS needs to protect red wolf

Letter to the Editor:

The March 19 Point of View “A recovery undermined” gave me the lowdown on what the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is doing with the Red Wolf Recovery Program.

The USFWS “Red Wolf Recovery Program Review” of the Red Wolf Recovery Program was supposed to further support the program with the intended goal of a successful recovery of the red wolf in the wild under the Endangered Species Act. Apparently the USFWS is just doing nothing in order to weaken the program so the USFWS can justify terminating the program.

The red wolf is a federally listed endangered species. “The Endangered Species Act is administered by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Commerce Department’s National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS). The purpose of the ESA is to protect and recover imperiled species and the ecosystems upon which they depend.”

The USFWS is not protecting the red wolf under the Endangered Species Act. I live in the red wolf recovery area, and I strongly support the critically endangered red wolf and the USFWS Red Wolf Recovery Program.
