Howling
For Wolves is hard at work advocating for smart, safe, and science
based wolf plans both in Minnesota and in Washington, D.C. With the
threats from federal politicians to remove endangered species’
protections for wolves, and with no responsible state plans in place to
allow wolves to live, the survival of the wolf is paramount. Dr. Maureen
Hackett, president and founder of HFW stated, “We ask our state and
federal leaders not to weaken the Endangered Species Act and instead
make progress toward increasing wolf recovery with plans that allow
wolves to live. Politicians should stop supporting a wolf-killing
agenda.”Since politicians in Washington and ineffective federal oversight are the biggest threat to the survival of the wolf, we have been working to oppose efforts to delist the gray wolf through the federal legislative process. Congressional action on the wolf would circumvent the court process, ignore the best available science, and remove federal oversight. No state has shown that they will responsibly continue the recovery of wolves after they lose federal protections. We are fortunate to have champions like Congresswoman Betty McCollum (D-MN-04) who is fighting to protect the wolf. We also have assurances from Senator Gary Peters (D- MI) and Senator Cory Booker (D-NJ) that they will work to protect wolves. Howling with the People!
Howling for Wolves has been busy recruiting supporters for our pack. Our numbers grow as we find fellow citizens willing to speak out for the wolf.
We met support, encouragement, and concern for the wolf at the Minneapolis Pride Festival.
We were able to educate and recruit new supporters at St. Paul’s Grand Old Day.
HFW Seeks Grant Funding
Howling For Wolves, in collaboration with a university based wildlife researcher, has submitted a proposal to Minnesota’s Legislative-Citizen Commission on Minnesota Resources (LCCMR) to secure funding for critical research and support for nonlethal methods that prevent wolf predation on livestock. Nonlethal methods have the potential to protect wolves, so they can live to protect native wildlife habitats. For more information on the process and the members of the LCCMR, visit www.lccmr.leg.mn
National Congress of American Indians Wolf Roundtable
Congresswoman Betty McCollum (D-MN-4) and the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe led a wolf roundtable and invited Dr. Hackett of Howling For Wolves, to participate on Tuesday, June 30 at the National Congress of American Indians Mid-Year Conference (NCAI) in St. Paul, MN. For many Native American tribes, the wolf holds a sacred cultural role. Several tribes have forbidden wolf hunting on their lands and established wolf sanctuaries.
Wisconsin Wolf Conference
The Wolf and Wildlife Conservation and Coexistence Initiative (WCCI) took place July 15-16 in Baraboo, WI. The conference examined the current state of wildlife stewardship and emphasized the need to respect diversity and the intrinsic value of wildlife. WCCI featured a lineup of distinguished presenters and panelists, including keynote speakers Darrel Rowledge, of the Alliance for Public Wildlife, and Dr. Adrian Treves, founder of the Carnivore Coexistence Lab at UW-Madison. The Great Minnesota Get Together
