Wolf Awareness Week programs & workshops held throughout the state
“In 1990, Wisconsin Governor Tommy Thompson signed the proclamation of Wisconsin Wolf Awareness Week, a time to celebrate these important animals, by highlighting the threats to their survival, spread the word about what you can do to help wolves stay protected, and help humans learn to live alongside them.” Timber Wolf Alliance
TIMBER WOLF ALLIANCE SCIENCE, OUTREACH & EDUCATION.
At the start of the Timber Wolf Alliance, 1987, only a dozen wolves were estimated to live in the Wisconsin and fewer in Upper Michigan. That year, the Sigurd Olson Environmental Institute began the Timber Wolf Alliance assisting twenty-one organizations and many private individuals interested in promoting wolf recovery in Wisconsin and Michigan’s Upper Peninsula through public education, citizen science, and volunteer activities.
The mission of the Timber Wolf Alliance is to use educational outreach and science-based information to promote an ecologically-functional wolf population within areas of suitable habitat in the Upper Midwest.
The Timber Wolf Alliance is committed to investigating the facts and relies on research to dispel myths and unfounded fears associated with wolves. TWA provides training in wolf biology and ecology, develops and disseminates educational materials on wolves, and supports volunteers to help with wolf monitoring efforts. OCTOBER 15 , 7:30 PM–9:00 PM OF WOLVES & WILDNESS
THE WOLVES OF YELLOWSTONE WITH WILDLIFE BIOLOGIST DOUG SMITH
Twenty years ago, wolves were set free in Yellowstone after a seventy-year absence. Dr. Douglas Smith and Gary Ferguson coauthored Decade of the Wolf: Returning the Wild to Yellowstone, about the release of thirty-one Canadian gray wolves in 1995 and 1996. Smith and Ferguson will talk about the discoveries and details of survival and wildlife dynamics and about how wolves changed the ecosystem.
FULL ECOLOGY WITH NATURE WRITER GARY FERGUSON
Ferguson will speak about expanding the modern conservation movement. SOEI will also pay tribute to Ferguson for his newest book, The Carry Home: Lessons from the American Wilderness, winner of the 2015 Sigurd Olson Nature Writing Award. Ferguson’s heart-rending tale is, as one author describes it, “a journey into the deepest parts of the human world and the wildest places in wilderness.” Yellowstone figures prominently in Ferguson’s story for letting its wilderness save and heal him from one of life’s most traumatic experiences.
