WI Wolf committee rep reveals true agenda
Dear Editor:
At the June 25 Natural Resources Board meeting, Mike Brust, on the state's Wolf Advisory Committee representing the Bowhunters Association, said the kill quota of 156 for the upcoming wolf season is too low.
So Brust proposed an alternative for this year. From the slick way he presented this, it was not any major change in the wolf quota.
Brust wants an unlimited quota in wolf Zone 6 — most of the southern two-thirds of Wisconsin — and the quota of 156 spread across the remaining five zones.
A zone without a quota is essentially one of extermination. Wolves would be gotten rid of completely, like bedbugs and cockroaches.
In reality, Brust's seemingly benign suggestion is a seriously harmful scheme: to greatly increase the number of dead wolves. If Zone 6 was wide open, there would be a huge harvest across the state.
According to the Department of Natural Resources, false reporting of zone of harvest during the wolf season seemed to be a common infraction. If there is a zone where anyone can get permits without restriction, many people will eventually go where the wolves are, but dishonestly report their harvests for Zone 6.
Eradicating wolves in one area while enabling illegal activity in all others — for four and a half months statewide — would deliver a severe blow to the population. Here lies the real desire.
Wolves will never receive just treatment when people with underlying hostility influence their fate. So far, the board has not accepted Brust's plan. Let's hope it never does.
