An ongoing issue involving the wolves on the West Coast needs people to speak up. The wolf populations are slowly repopulating within Oregon, California and Washington. Wolves were protected under the federal Endangered Species Act until 2011, when gray wolves were stripped of that protection.
Although the populations are rising, the wolves still need protection to help them replenish the species. Gray wolves are a keystone species that help maintain and regulate deer and elk populations. And that regulation helps the growth and sustainability of other species interconnected with the wolf population that deserve the opportunity to thrive in their natural habitats.
The Center for Biological Diversity is one of the major groups speaking up and fighting for the gray wolf population. It needs all the support it can get.
Wolves deserve to live and should be protected from being hunted and killed. Stories like “the big bad wolf” have created a negative perception of wolves and that may be a big contributor to their lack of protection.
I challenge people to do the research and not fall back on stories and the perceptions of others. It will be nearly impossible for the wolf populations to recover if we don’t protect them.
