The Gazette reports (http://bit.ly/203s8jS ) the Colorado Springs zoo said in a news release that the decision to euthanize the wolf Monday was "difficult but humane" due to its terminal health issues. The female wolf was 12 years old.
Weeko was brought to the zoo in 2010 to mate and produce pups that could be released into the wild. Weeko did not produce any pups, but zoo officials say she still served a purpose.
The zoo is now left with one other Mexican gray wolf, Leopold, who is 11.
The breed has been on the endangered subspecies list since the 1970s.
Zoo officials expect that Weeko will be replaced, possibly with a younger male and female pair.
