Two wolves, known as the Sled Springs Pair, were found dead in Wallowa County in late August, the Oregon State Police said this morning.
The male and female pair were found within 50 yards of each other by an Oregon State Police Fish and Wildlife Trooper during the week of Aug. 24.
The cause of death is under investigation.
The female wolf was radio-collared and known as OR-21. After the collar emitted a mortality signal, ODFW personnel responded to the location and found two dead wolves. The male wolf, who had been observed with OR-21, were newly established in the area northeast of La Grande.
The Oregon State Police is seeking the public's help and requesting anyone who may have information regarding this incident to contact Senior Trooper Kreg Coggins at 541-426-3049 or call the TIP Hotline at 1-800-452-788 or TIP E-Mail TIP@state.or.us.
All wolves in Oregon are protected by the state Endangered Species Act — which would apply to Sled Springs Pair.
Ranchers in northeast Oregon have the ability to shoot a wolf caught in the act of wounding, biting, killing or chasing livestock in some circumstances.
