A must-see documentary looking at Alberta’s management policy on wolves airs this weekend.
On Monday, Pyramid Productions presents Unnatural Enemies: The War on Wolves on CTV (check your local listings for the time). It looks at the province’s use of bounty hunters, wire snares and strychnine poisoning to kill thousands of wolves and other wildlife.The story has made headlines for years, including a recent one about scientists raising questions about the ethics of Alberta’s wolf cull.
Others have suggested it’s important to manage wolf numbers to try to save the threatened caribou.
This hour-long documentary, which I watched tonight, pulls it all together in a compelling way by talking to trappers, hunters, ranchers, environmentalists, biologists, animal advocates and government officials.

It’s all narrated by long-time conservationist and author Kevin Van Tighem, who concludes that killing the wolves isn’t actually fixing anything.
“Wolves aren’t the problem,” he said in a news release from Pyramid Productions. “We’re the problem.
“Wolves are just another victim.”
It’s one of those shows that’s sure to reignite the debate, which is never bad.
