In response to the Feb. 10 letter "Wolves: 'Re-introduction' not accurate term," Doug Crachy seems to be grasping at straws and looking for reasons to justify the killing of wolves in the state of Montana and elsewhere.
The first point that is overlooked here is that gray wolves did not disappear from Montana and the rest of the United States because they died a natural death or because some act of God wiped them out. They disappeared because humans systematically exterminated them. The Yellowstone reintroduction reversed a horrendous wrong that people had committed.
Second, the Endangered Species Act is a federal law, which started as a grassroots movement of the people. It was then passed by Congress and signed into law. Since it is a federal law, that means that endangered species belong to all Americans and all Americans have the right to speak up for them, regardless of what state they are in. The outdated 1842 court ruling was 100-plus years before the passage of that act.
In regards to private herds being allowed to graze on public lands: no, as a matter of fact, I don't want these animals grazing on my public lands. I want the land to belong to the wildlife that have the right to be there. Not ranchers who get to use the land for dirt cheap prices and then kill any predators who might kill one of their animals who don't belong there on the first place.
Finally, it's already legal to hunt wolves in Montana where Crachy lives. So what is his real agenda? My agenda is for us humans to coexist with the predators who were here long before we were.
