Happy Anniversary Yellowstone Wolves!

20 years ago today, the National Park Service and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service released wolves into Yellowstone National Park. The Northern Gray Wolf had once roamed all of North America but was systemically exterminated, including inside America’s great national parks.

Wolves had been missing from Yellowstone, where they played a key role in the ecology of the forest, for seven decades. That changed on January 12, 1995, when eight wolves were relocated to the park. Another six wolves arrived in Yellowstone a week later.

“The reintroduction of wolves to Yellowstone and central Idaho was a milestone in the history of wildlife conservation in America,” says Suzanne Stone, an official with Defenders of Wildlife, worked tirelessly to make it happen. “Against all political odds, we helped bring back a living icon of the West that had been eradicated from most of its range in the lower 48 states.

It was the ultimate expression of America’s renewed commitment to wildlife stewardship and protection of our natural resources for future generations.”
