Franklin County deputies tracking wolves

FRANKLIN COUNTY, Mo. - The owner of a wolf that escaped from its pen in Franklin County and killed a dog is setting traps to capture the animal.

The wolf's owner, who is permitted to own it, is responsible for capturing it, but the Franklin County Sheriff's Office is assisting and says the owner has contacted a trapper to catch his pet.

Friday night, the wolf killed a Boston terrier. The dog's owner says he had the chance to shoot the wolf, but didn't because his wife asked him not to. Since then, the Franklin County Sheriff's Office says there have been a half dozen or more confirmed sightings of the wolf in the southern part of the county where it escaped.

The owner and deputies have seen it themselves, but haven't been able to catch it. "They're very skittish. They will not come towards anybody. We've had instances where we've been close to the animal but couldn't get him to come to the owner," said Capt. Steve Elliott.

Authorities say two wolves escaped from their pen as the owner opened it to feed them. A farmer killed one of them when he found it near his sheep.
