Hello Wolf Advocate:
As the rains recede in Minnesota, we write to update you:
The 2014 MN legislative session produced two new laws regarding wolves:
1) required quarterly report of wolf deaths on the MN DNR's website and
2) a doubling of the penalty for a repeat offense of wolf poaching.
While these were disappointing results, we know that our presence at the
capitol and in public is vital to protect wolves. Over the 2013 and
2014 sessions, Howling For Wolves wrote and had introduced four separate
wolf bills. It was pressure created by wolf advocates that got the
final two provisions into the Game and Fish Bill passed. Going forward,
we have identified lawmakers willing to protect wolves. Please read our
"Vote Wolf" page
for a summary of the bills, and to learn the lawmakers that introduced
or signed onto these bills. The fall election is an opportunity to help
wolf-friendly candidates win, so that they can return and help us
protect the wolf.
Our Summer Plans:
Howling For Wolves will be at PRIDE and the Minnesota State Fair. We
will be in greater (rural) Minnesota for county fairs and events. Our
increased presence in wolf territory is necessary to inform the public
about the need to protect the wolf. Volunteers are needed at these
events.
We are initiating a plan to build relationships with livestock producers
in wolf territory this summer. Our goal is to build trust so that we
can assist with increasing the use of non-lethal methods for wolves.
What can you do?
A simple act of wearing our "Stop The Hunt" t-shirt can assist the wolf
by increasing public awareness and starting conversations. Now you can
order yours: https://www.howlingforwolves.org/shop. Wear this shirt out this summer!
Keep Howling,
Howling For Wolves
PS: We will have lawn signs soon.
