Evidence seems to suggest wolves are attempting to naturally
re-colonize Northeast US. The availability of wolf prey and habitat has
been documented to support wolf recovery, as both are abundant in the
Northeast. The only obstacle to the return of the wolf in the Northeast
is leadership and a clear plan for its recovery.
In the Northeast, wolves are protected under the Endangered Species Act. However, all five states (Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts and New York) fail to have sufficient precautions in place to protect wolves. None of the five states has a management plan to address the potential return of wolves. None of these states promote wolf recovery. All of these factors put wolves at great risk in the Northeast.
The return of the wolf to the Northeast will reflect a more fully functional and wild ecosystem in the Northeast. Considering the complexities of the debate, the Northeast Wolf Coalition is a working group of partner organizations, scientific mentors and advisers who collaborate on the critical issues that relate to the return of the wolf to the Northeast.
