Commend Nonprofit Sanctuary for Saving Captive Wolves

Commend Nonprofit Sanctuary for Saving Captive Wolves

Target: Diane Gallegos, Executive Director of Wolf Haven

Goal: Applaud sanctuary for respecting and helping captive and wild wolves.

Wolf Haven is a wolf sanctuary in Washington State that is a positive influence in the lives of abused wolves. The sanctuary takes in captive wolves that have been mistreated, as well as wolves that are in danger of extinction, in order to help the species thrive again. The sanctuary is a main factor in the survival of many wolf species and a staple in wolf education for the public.

Located in Tenino, Washington, Wolf Haven is remote and beautifully landscaped. The enclosures for the recovering wolves are designed to resemble the same areas wild wolves live in: they are complete with native grasses, plenty of trees and ample hiding places. The wolves are fed natural diets and provided warm and comfortable areas to rest. The caretakers of the wolves are sure to keep natural hierarchies in place: only two wolves share an enclosure, one male and one female, encouraging them to develop intimate relationships with one another. Wolves mate for life; however, if one wolf mate at the sanctuary dies, the caretakers introduce another to the lone wolf, after its loved one has been properly mourned. The sanctuary uses all donations, and sales from the gift shop, to benefit the wolves and their enclosures.

Wolf Haven provides refuge to wolves that have been born into captivity; captured and kept as pets; or used for breeding in order to sell wolf pups, which is unfortunately an incredibly lucrative operation. Unless breeding is necessary for the species, in which case wolf pups are released into the wild, the wolves at Wolf Haven are either fixed or kept on birth control. The wolves are given space if needed, and companionship when they are lonely. Since 1982 the sanctuary has been a wonderful asset to all species of wolves, and is one of only two wolf sanctuaries in the country rated extremely high for how their wolves are treated. Commend Wolf Haven for their dedication to such a misunderstood mammal.
