Howling For Wolves Posts Urgent Wolf News

Howling For Wolves Published in Star Tribune; Urgent New Info about Fed De-Regulation

There was a major media coup Monday (9-9-13) with the placement of an Op-Ed piece in the Star Tribune called "Minnesota's wolves needed for ecological balance: A recreational hunt doesn’t follow the DNR’s stated management plans," written by Howling For Wolves founder, Maureen Hackett, M.D.

In other developments, because wolves in MN and the rest of the Great Lakes are no longer federally protected, more wolves are dying due to state-sponsored recreational hunts and lightened laws allowing for more wolf killing.

The federal Endangered Species Act (ESA) listing that kept wolves from going extinct in the lower 48 states, is now being taken away for all but the Mexican gray wolf.  The US Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) petitioned to remove all wolves in the lower 48 states from the protection of the ESA.
  • The science is fuzzy at best but a letter by PEER summarizes it nicely.

This delisting throughout the entire continental US places threatens the future of wolves because many states have policies that are hostile toward wolves as a species. For example, South Dakota has already passed laws that wolves are to be treated as vermin.  So wolves are not likely to ever be able to live in South Dakota.

Wolves will have few places that allow them to exist. There is the real threat that wolves will be in remnant populations of small groups of a few wolves struggling to survive under constant pressures of state-sanctioned recreational hunting and trapping and other forms of killing.

The federal delisting petition for all wolves in the lower 48 means that we in Minnesota carry the responsibility of ensuring our wolves for future generations.
