How they voted: Michigan lawmakers weigh in on wolves and wildlife management

The Michigan House approved a bill last week that could allow a wolf hunt in parts of the Upper Peninsula regardless of a how a pending statewide referendum on the issue turns out. Senate Bill 288 would allow the Natural Resources Commission to by itself designate a game species.

That power now rests with the Legislature. Supporters say the bill is needed to potentially allow a wolf hunt in areas of the U.P. threatened by the wolf population, and to make sure future game species decisions are based on scientific management principles. Critics of the bill say it would take away the people’s right to vote on certain wildlife issues.

Senate Bill 288 passed the House by a 72-38 vote last week. The bill will soon be headed to Gov. Rick Snyder, who intends to sign it pending final review. The House vote:
