The Oregon Department of Agriculture Monday awarded nearly $83,000 in wolf compensation grants to eight eastern Oregon counties.
It's
the first round of funding under a new program created by the Oregon
Legislature last year. The money comes out of a fund that has $100,000
total for 2012 and 2013.
That money can be spent to repay
ranchers for lost livestock. But that's only if wildlife officials can
confirm that the animal was killed by wolves.
Bruce Pokarney is
a spokesman for Oregon Department of Agriculture. He says Wallowa
County was the only county to receive funds for livestock losses.
"The
rest of the money – 80 percent of it – is going to the eight counties
for prevention methods. This is a proactive attempt to try to minimize
the conflict between wolves and livestock," Pokarney said.
The state rejected $37,000 in requests for funds to repay ranchers for livestock losses that were not confirmed wolf kills.
