Maned Wolves Make Public Debut at San Diego Zoo
Jamie, a young female maned wolf, explored her new home as she and her sister (not pictured) made their public debut at the San Diego Zoo on Friday. The species has not been seen at the Zoo for more than 30 years. An exhibit was built for the two sisters, Jasmine and Jamie, in the Zoo’s Polar Rim zone. Although not considered threatened, this South American species has been on the decline largely as a result of habitat loss and degradation. The maned wolf lives in open forests, savannas and marshlands. It is omnivorous, eating small mammals, insects, reptiles, birds, fruits and vegetation.
