- Government trappers have killed two of the four wolves involved in recent livestock depredations on the CB Ranch in the southern reaches of Ravalli County.
So far, the wolves involved in killing a horse just across the highway have managed to escape unscathed.
Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks Warden Lou Royce said a black female was caught in a trap and euthanized Sunday on the CB Ranch. The wolf was wearing a collar.
Another wolf in the Divide Creek pack was killed earlier.
The kill permit that was issued following the death of a calf a few weeks ago allowed for up to four wolves to be killed from that pack.
On the west side of U.S. Highway 93, government trappers are having a more difficult time catching wolves involved in the death of a horse on Two Feathers Ranch, about 1 1/2 miles south of Darby.
"So far, nothing has happened on that side of the valley," Royce said. "They have kind of had some bad luck. The wolves have pulled out of traps or stepped right around them."
Five permits were issued to the landowner, but Royce said he understands there are probably only two wolves remaining in the Trapper Peak Pack that is believed responsible for the horse's death.
One wolf was believed to have been shot recently, although its carcass was not recovered.
"They think the guy winged it," Royce said. "The thinking is there were only three members of that pack that were left and that one probably didn't survive."
