State releases revised gray-wolf plan


After hosting 19 public meetings and reviewing more than 65,000 comments, the state released its revised plan to recover gray wolves in Washington that should both please and upset cattlemen, hunters and conservationists.

WENATCHEE — After hosting 19 public meetings and reviewing more than 65,000 comments, the state released its revised plan to recover gray wolves in Washington that should both please and upset cattlemen, hunters and conservationists.
Some aren't happy that the plan still requires 15 packs of wolves for three consecutive years to remove protections required under the Endangered Species Act.

Others might not like the agency's plan to seek higher penalties for poaching wolves.
Scheduled for final review in August by the Washington Wildlife Commission, the plan will guide state strategies for recovering gray wolves in Washington. Wolves are listed as federally endangered in the western two-thirds of the state, where the only known pack is the Methow Valley's Lookout Pack.
The federal government recently delisted Rocky Mountain gray wolves, including lands east of Highway 97 where the state's two other known packs reside. Additional unconfirmed packs may exist in the Blue Mountains, North Cascades National Park and Kittitas County, according to the draft document.

Rocky Beach, wildlife diversity manager for the state Department of Fish and Wildlife, said the plan is largely the same as the state's draft proposal, although many parts were "tweaked" to reflect comments and scientific peer reviews.
One of the biggest changes has to do with the numbers of breeding pairs needed to remove wolves from federal protections, he said. The draft plan required two successful breeding pairs in the Eastern Washington region, two in the North Cascades, and five in the Southern Cascades and Northwest Coast. Six additional breeding pairs in any part of the state were also needed.

Now, six breeding pairs are required in Eastern Washington, four in the North Cascades and five altogether in Southern Cascades and the Northwest Coast to delist them. Beach said the change allows wildlife managers more certainty in recovery before delisting, and more flexibility in managing wolves in the separate areas. Fifteen successful breeding pairs is equal to between 97 and 361 wolves, the plan says.
One of the most controversial changes will likely be allowing landowners or state Wildlife officers to kill a wolf in the act of killing livestock, guard animals or domestic dogs while on private or leased property. The wolf must be caught "in the act" of attacking the animal. "It's a very rare event, as we know from the Rocky Mountain states," Beach said.

The plan also gives Wildlife managers new options to kill or move wolves that threaten at-risk populations of deer, elk or caribou. Beach said it's also unlikely that wolves will be plentiful enough to harm the state's elk or deer herds while they're still endangered, but it gives wildlife managers more options. Approximately 300 wolves will kill between 6,700 and 10,000 deer and elk each year, the plan states.

The plan also:
• Adds new recommendations for homeowners who own dogs and live in areas with wolves, including not leaving dogs outside overnight unless they are in a sturdy kennel, and not allowing dogs to run at large.
• Adds new recommendations for people who hike with dogs, including considering leaving dogs at home while hiking in areas with wolves, keeping dogs on a leash when hiking in known wolf habitat and placing a bell on the dog's collar to alert wolves that people are present.
• Adds information about parasitic tapeworms, which have recently been found in more than half of the wolves tested in Idaho and Montana. Beach said the parasite can also make its way into the state from traveling coyotes, fox, deer, elk or other ungulates.

The Washington Fish and Wildlife Commission will review the new draft plan during its June 4 meeting in Olympia, and a 17-member citizens group which helped draft the plan will look at changes before the state releases its updated Environmental Impact Statement to the public. The commission will hear public comments on the final plan in August before considering adoption in December.

Keeping Tabs On Wolves



It’s been more than a decade since gray wolves crossed the Idaho border into Oregon in 1999. Northeastern Oregon’s Imnaha pack has several confirmed livestock kills in Eastern Oregon near the town of Joseph.
That has ranchers there both angry and worried over the future of their business. But newer technology and cooperation with the state is aiding ranchers in tracking the wolves’ whereabouts.
The presence of wolves in northeastern Oregon’s Wallowa Valley has changed how livestock is managed by ranchers.

The latest change came about two weeks ago, when the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife began sending daily text messages, describing the general locations of wolves in the Imnaha pack.
So far, 38 ranchers in northeastern Oregon are receiving these wolf-location text messages. The state agency says it does not give exact locations in real time.
Ramona Phillips: "ODFW text us every morning and tells us where the collared wolves have been that evening. In one case they texted us and said we had a collared wolf coming onto our property."
Ramona Phillips and other ranchers get these daily text messages that tell them where collared wolves in the Imnaha pack were the night before. Phillips is not convinced such messages will make a big difference in protecting livestock. But they are at least giving ranchers some peace of mind.

Ten years ago, Phillips would have let her cows roam the nearby grasslands alone. Today, she or her husband live in a small camp trailer in the fields at night to watch for wolves. Snow still coats the mountains here and temperatures at night are still below freezing. Wolves frequent an area that surrounds the town of Joseph on the eastern side of the state near Idaho known as wolf highway.
Ramona Phillips: "I don't know who came up with that but basically the wolves run the same area over and over. They mark it as their territory."
With the wolves comes the expected deaths of livestock. Before the state began sending text messages to ranchers, Lori Schaafsma says she and other ranchers learned of a wolf’s whereabouts only when they saw one or found evidence of a kill.

Two months ago a wolf killed one of Schaafsma’s animals, ignoring the meat and taking the guts before leaving. The next day she spotted a second wolf a few hundred yards from her home, apparently there to pick at the dead carcass.
Lori Schaafsma: "And here cresting the hill right out my kitchen window...I saw the alpha male -- a different wolf than I had seen the prior night -- crested the hill. Jumped the fence like it was nothing."
Because of the increased number of wolves seen here in Wallowa County, Ramona Phillips and Lori Schaafsma, along with others, started the Wallowa County Livestock Education Committee.
Ramona Phillips: "I think our committee was formed just out of frustration with what’s happening here with the wolf."

Phillips says the cooperation with the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife over tracking wolves is a sign the state is willing to help. But is sharing the locations of collared wolves prudent? Rob Klavins with the environmental advocacy group “Oregon Wild” has mixed feelings.
Rob Klavins: "Well, I think at best it's a tool that can help prevent conflict and to the extent that it does that we are happy that that information is getting out there when it's being used appropriately. But at worst, it can provide a road map for killing what’s an endangered species in the state of Oregon. We have less than 20 wolves confirmed in the state."
Michelle Dennehy, a spokeswoman with the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, says this is a valuable, non-lethal method of dealing with wolves. She says so far they have had no indication that ranchers have abused the tracking information.

Oregon has three known wolf packs that live in the northeast part of the state. Oregon’s wolf management plan allows anyone with a wolf kill permit to shoot such a predator seen in the act of biting, wounding or killing livestock. The state has issued 24 kill permits to ranchers in Eastern Oregon.
Idaho doesn’t give collared wolf locations to ranchers. However, Gregg Losinski with the Idaho Department of Fish and Game says it does respond immediately to livestock kills. The agency works closely with ranchers to locate the responsible wolf.

When possible, that wolf is killed by a federal agent to prevent more livestock losses. Idaho stopped tracking wolves when they were re-listed in 2010. Idaho began tracking wolves again in May when wolf management was returned to the state.
Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife spokesman Rocky Beach says his agency doesn’t share wolf locations on a regular basis as Oregon does. But for the past two years it has shared general locations with some ranchers who have lost livestock.

It's easy to forget how big they really are, which is funny, in a way, considering how large they loom in Western culture.

But it's true. Come face to face with Canis lupus, the gray wolf, and the first thing you notice is how impossible it would be to mistake this creature for anything else. Its neck and shoulders are dense and marbled with enough muscle to take down mammals three times its size. Its paws are as large as a man's hand.
This is not just another coyote.

 Still, staring into the eyes of a wolf on display at the University of Washington's Burke Museum — part of a new exhibit, "Wolves and Wild Lands in the 21st Century" — it's hard to comprehend the virulent strain of hatred that most European settlers once felt toward this creature. It's no coincidence that depictions of wolves in art and literature were almost always dominated by fangs.


"People didn't hate cougars," said Jeff Bradley, the Burke's mammalogy collection manager. "But the wolf was evil incarnate."

The history and future of our relationship with wolves is the theme of the new traveling exhibit running Saturday through Sept. 5 at the Burke. The exhibit includes five full-sized specimens from around the country, pelts, paw prints, photographs, other canine skulls, games and puzzles. It essentially asks: Can we live together?

It is a timely question. Driven out of the West by hunters and paid marksmen decades ago, wolves from successful reintroduction in Idaho and Yellowstone National Park 16 years ago finally worked their way back to Washington in 2008. The state's first wolf pack in 70 years took up residence in the Methow Valley.

Today, authorities already fear poachers have killed three or four of those wolves. One carcass was found dumped along a highway. The pelt of another was found by a FedEx worker after a customer tried shipping a bloody, leaking box to Canada. Meanwhile, as part of a bitter budget fight last month, Congress removed Endangered Species protection for many — but not all — wolves in the northern Rockies.

Clearly we remain divided about these creatures.

The exhibit offers a great primer for the uninitiated, and provides fascinating tidbits for others. Did you know that in just five years after these top predators were reintroduced, gray wolves had so reordered Yellowstone's ecosystem that coyote populations were reduced by half? Or that after North Carolina's red wolves were returned to an 875-square-mile refuge in 1987, the most immediate threat to the species was interbreeding with coyotes? Or that scientists, until recently, still argued over just how many species of wolves are native to the United States?

The exhibit suffers only slightly from its Midwestern roots. (It was created for the Bell Museum of Natural History in Minneapolis.) In a few places it suggests development and habitat loss remain the greatest threat to wolves. While certainly true for many — if not most — endangered species (think salmon and spotted owls), it isn't really true for wolves in Washington. At least not yet.

Unlike, say, southern resident killer whales — whose survival no one seems to oppose — the greatest threat to wolves is public attitudes. For that, one antidote may be the kind of education offered by the Burke.

Researchers map likely future contact with wolves


As Wisconsin's wolf population has grown, so have conflicts with humans.
But where will the future problems occur? And if we know those locations, how might landowners and others be able to respond?
To help pinpoint future problem areas, researchers at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and the Department of Natural Resources have created a new tool to manage wolf-human conflicts.
The researchers use data from past wolf attacks on livestock and pets to make predictions about where they might occur in the future.
The results are represented on maps, which they call "risk maps," that show the future likelihood of wolf conflict.
"It should help us be one step closer to coexistence with wolves," said Adrian Treves, assistant professor of environmental studies at UW.
The results were published this week in the journal BioScience.
The researchers found that areas of northwestern Wisconsin are likely to present the greatest risk of predatory wolf attacks - especially portions of Burnett, Polk, Rusk and Washburn counties.
For now, the map using data from the DNR can be broken down to one-mile squares, but Treves said that the next phase of the study is to fine tune the maps to areas less than the size of a football field.
The aim, if funding is available, is to make the maps available to landowners in wolf country in the next year or so.
"This can help with future management of the wolf," said Adrian Wydeven, a wolf ecologist at the DNR and one of the authors of the study.
For example, Wisconsin authorities could use lethal means to control wolves once they are no longer listed as an endangered species.

Future hunts possible

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service announced plans last month to lift federal protections for gray wolves in Wisconsin, Minnesota and Michigan.
That could pave the way to hunts of the wolf in Wisconsin, and the mapping could pinpoint the best areas to reduce future conflict, Wydeven said.
Wydeven and Treves also said the maps could help landowners with nonlethal means to protect their property, such as the use of guard dogs, electric fences or greater oversight by landowners.
The scientists used 133 documented attacks on livestock from 1999 to 2006, and then verified their model by using data from 60 attacks from 2007 to 2009.
The risk map correctly predicted 88% of the incidents, the study found.
Areas of southern and southeastern Wisconsin were not included because of the absence of wolves in those areas.
The researchers found that despite a growing wolf population - now estimated at more than 800 - about one-third of Wisconsin's study area was considered to be in an at-risk area.

Increasing complaints

The research comes at a critical juncture in wolf management. A growing population has led to increasing complaints over wolf attacks on livestock and other animals.
In turn, the DNR and the Fish and Wildlife Service periodically are called in to investigate wolf killings. In 2010, there were 16 such cases in Wisconsin, Minnesota and Michigan - eight of them in Wisconsin.
The most recent population estimate by the DNR shows that Wisconsin has about 825 wolves and more than 200 packs. The DNR set a recovery goal of 350 wolves.
The UW-DNR study found two landscapes that, as expected, presented a high risk profile for wolf attacks: areas near a wolf pack and areas near pastures or grassland, where presumably livestock could be present.
A third area was more of a surprise: locales away from forests.
"That might be because wolves are looking for deer in and around the edge of the forest," said Treves, the founder of the Carnivore Coexistence Lab at UW.
When wolves leave forested landscapes, their rate of encounter with livestock rises, Wydeven said.

EUREKA, Mo. -  Six Mexican gray wolf pups have been born at the Endangered Wolf Center in Eureka.  For the first time, viewers will be able to follow the rarely seen first weeks of the wolves’ family life online.
 The pups born May 1 are the second litter born to parents Perkins and Abby who had their first litter last year. The pups, five females and one male, are one of only four litters to be born in 2011 and their very existence has national and international implications for this endangered species.

“To be able to broadcast streaming video of these endangered wolf pups and their adult parents is an amazing feat we have never tried before,” said Ralph Pfremmer, board chairman of the EWC. “This will give everyone an opportunity to see these remarkable keystone predators inside the wolves’ lair.”

Pfremmer remarked that recent online, live video of bald eagle chicks and even common domestic dogs have been Internet sensations visited by millions of viewers.

“We hope the public has that same interest in these very rare wolves because we need to find significant donations to raise them and many of our other wolves so many can be returned to the wild.”

Critically endangered, only 50 Mexican gray wolves—often referred to as “El Lobos”—are living outside captivity in New Mexico and Arizona. The Endangered Wolf Center has been the birth site for 170 Mexican grays. At least one alpha member of each existing wild pack can trace its ancestry directly to the Endangered Wolf Centerwhich has been called “the cornerstone of the Mexican gray wolf program” by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service.

Hunted, trapped and poisoned for more than a century by ranchers and the expanding population in the western states, the Mexican gray had been nearly eliminated from the planet. Only the critical and painstaking work of the EWC and a handful of similar captive breeding centers have begun the difficult process of bringing the species back from the brink over the past 29 years. The Mexican gray was designated an endangered species in 1976, and was considered extinct in the wild until their reintroduction in 1998 into Arizona and New Mexico.

The pups mother, Abby, was born in 2004 into a large litter of pups. She was injured at six months jumping onto a den roof and later removed from her pack. Proud wolf father Perkins, a year younger than Abby, was from the first successful artificially inseminated litter of Mexican gray wolves to be born in captivity and was partially hand-raised.

Perkins was named in honor of the Endangered Wolf Center’s founder, naturalist and zoo director, Dr. Marlin Perkins by famed actress Betty White.



Initially introduced in late 2009 with the hope that they would become a mating pair, Abby and Perkins bonded.  On May 2, 2010, Abby gave birth to a litter of five healthy pups.  Both being good nurturing parents and extremely valuable genetically to the population, Abby and Perkins were approved to breed again in 2011.  They were seen mating in February 2011 resulting in their latest litter.  These pups will be one of the very rare “multigenerational” packs in captivity.  Having multigenerational family pack experience is extremely important to the yearlings and the pups and will teach them skills that will add to their ability to be successful in the wild.

The EWC is participating with the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service and the Wildlife Service of the USDA in first-of-its-kind research to have this litter to wear “pup radio” telemetry collars when they are six weeks old until they are approximately seven months old. The collars are designed to stretch and expand with the growing pups and will help biologists locate the pups in the future.

In the wild population, only about 20% to 40% of the pups are surviving each year and USFWS is unable to find the bodies to determine whether the cause of death was poaching, disease, predation or starvation and therefore cannot address the cause.

“What we do in captivity is diminished if we cannot understand how to help the wild population be strong and healthy,” said Regina Mossotti, head of animal care at EWC. “The EWC is one of only two facilities in the world that can help with this extremely important research.”

The Endangered Wolf Centerwas founded in 1971 by Dr. Perkins and his wife, Carol. Perkins headed the St. Louis Zoo from 1962 to 1970 when he became director emeritus. He is best known as the co-creator and host of the famed “Mutual of Omaha Wild Kingdom. A world-acclaimed zoologist and naturalist, Perkins passed away in 1986.

Pfremmer said the timing of the wolf litter couldn’t be better. “Like many non-profits, the EWC is facing extremely challenging financial times. We hope the public the world over will watch these adorable pups and find it in their hearts to help us be able to afford their care.”

Livestock risks from Wisconsin wolves localized, predictable

It's an issue that crops up wherever humans and big predators — wolves, bears, lions — coexist.

"It's just hard to live alongside large carnivores. They damage crops, they kill livestock and pets, they threaten people's safety," says University of Wisconsin-Madison professor Adrian Treves. And the sheer presence of a wolf nearby has typically been enough to make farmers fear for their animals, he adds. "Wherever there were carnivores, people thought there was risk."

But Red Riding Hood and the Three Little Pigs notwithstanding, not all wolves are big and bad. Even as Wisconsin's wolf population grows, intensifying the potential for conflicts with people, Treves' research is revealing that one of the most visible types of conflict — attacks on livestock — is highly localized and may be predictable.

Treves, head of the Carnivore Coexistence Laboratory in the UW-Madison Nelson Institute for Environmental Studies, works in partnership with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources to understand and mediate human-carnivore conflicts with an eye toward reducing the threat to both people and animals.

When problems arise, Treves says, "people traditionally respond by retaliating, either by clearing wildlife habitat or by killing the carnivores."

It's an approach that simply isn't sustainable, he says, noting that top carnivores are linchpin species in many ecosystems and among the most endangered species on the planet. "How do you balance people's need for safety and their livelihoods — livestock and crops — how do you balance that human need with the global imperative to conserve nature?"

Their research on the topic has now yielded a risk map of wolf attacks on livestock in Wisconsin, which identifies areas of high and low risk throughout the state. The study, co-authored with Adrian Wydeven and Jane Wiedenhoeft of the Wisconsin DNR and Kerry Martin of UW-Madison, appears in the June issue of the journal BioScience.

Risk mapping is already used in a wide range of settings, from police activity to outbreaks of infectious disease, as a way to mobilize and manage resources. It's a very common-sense approach, Treves says, based on identifying characteristics that distinguish affected sites from neighboring unaffected sites.

"If we can isolate the factors that make them different, we should be able to predict where those attacks will happen in the future and we can target our prevention to the highest-risk areas," he says.

Their analysis, using 133 documented livestock attacks between 1999 and 2006, highlighted three variables that predicted higher risk of wolf attacks: higher percentage of pasture, grassland or hayfield; closer proximity to the nearest wolf pack; and greater distance from forest.

Of the parts of Wisconsin within 100 kilometers of a wolf pack (most of the state, excluding the southern and southeastern-most regions), only one-third of the study area was found to be at risk of wolf attacks on livestock. The highest-risk areas comprise just 10.5 percent, concentrated in the northwest and a few pockets near Lake Superior.

The researchers also verified their model using data from 2007-09 and found that their risk map correctly predicted the vast majority (88 percent) of those incidents.

Treves says it's a good start to help farmers and resource managers target prevention efforts on those high-risk hotspots, distribute limited resources as efficiently and effectively as possible and, hopefully, reduce livestock attacks.

"Prediction promotes prevention," he says. "Every single wolf pack in Wisconsin has access to people or pets or livestock," but with only a handful implicated in attacks each year, "the majority of the wolf population is not causing problems."

Wolves switch up to beef, says study

Wolves will eat beef if they have a choice in the menu.

A recent paper published by the Ecological Society of America shows that wolf diets change seasonally when livestock are on the landscape.

The study, conducted by University of Alberta PhD student Andrea Morehouse and Dr. Mark Boyce, professor at the U of A department of biological sciences, says that although wild ungulates are the primary prey for wolves, livestock predation is a growing concern in areas where wolf and livestock territory overlap.
Predation on cattle in Alberta occurs mostly in the southwest corner of the province, with 37 per cent of all paid claims on livestock losses.

Predation in this corner is a year-round problem for cattle producers because wildlife habitats overlap grazing lands.

"The primary period of concern regarding livestock loss is summer and early fall, when cattle graze freely on public land, often in high densities, with little to no monitoring," the study says.

These grazing times coincide with wolf pup rearing season.

From June to October, cluster kill sites indicated that nearly half of the animals killed by wolves were cattle, with the remaining kills being mostly elk, moose and deer. About 40 per cent of the cattle killed were calves, 40 per cent were yearlings, and less than 20 per cent were adult cows or bulls.

Scat samples indicated that killed and scavenged cattle made up about 60 per cent of the wolf diet, and the other 40 per cent was wild prey.

When cattle have been moved off these areas, and these territories are in non-grazing season, wolf diets switch back to ungulates, in what Morehouse and Boyce note as prey switching.

Wolves also scavenged more during the non-grazing season, and 85 per cent of all scavenging events occurred at rancher boneyards or deadstock piles.

Because scavenging at deadstock piles makes up a large part of the seasonal diet, wolves visited these sites repeatedly, and because of the location of the deadstock piles near ranch buildings, this brought the wolves into close contact with other activities such as calving.

The study used clusters of global positioning system (GPS) telemetry relocations and scat analysis to investigate wolf diets throughout the year.

Wolf diets were studied in a 3,300 square kilometre area in southwestern Alberta, where wolf-cattle conflicts are highest. This area is a narrow region of public land that represents an important corridor between a large population of wolves in Canada and one in the U.S.

The majority of seasonally-grazed cattle in this forestry area is cow-calf pairs and yearlings.

Four wolves from three packs — the Crowsnest pack, Bob Creek pack and Castle Carbondale pack — were collared with GPS radiocollars. The data off these collars provided locations of wolfs, and as a result, depending on the time spent at these locations, also indicated kill sites or scavenge sites.

The team of researchers visited 698 cluster sites, finding 181 kill sites and 32 scavenge sites. The other sites were bedding, denning and rendevous sites.

Examination of 319 scats identified 675 prey items.

The remains of 50 cattle at wolf kill sites were identified during the course of the study from the three packs, averaging at 17 head per pack per year. The GPS data allowed the team to locate cattle that otherwise may have been classified as missing at the end of the season. Because Fish and Wildlife have to confirm kills, the data allowed sites to be identified at least sooner than they may have been otherwise.

Results from the study showed higher predation numbers than what had been previously believed.
While the predator compensation program pays 100 per cent of the market value of livestock killed by wolves or bears, and 50 per cent for probable kills, there are no programs to compensate for missing animals.
The study recommends solutions such as bear-proof metal storage bins for deadstock to reduce scavenging and to prevent wolves and bears from becoming accustomed to the livestock diet and to the pattern.

ALBANY, N.Y. -- Wolves in the eastern United States are hybrids of gray wolves and coyotes, while the region's coyotes actually are wolf-coyote-dog hybrids, according to a new genetic study that is adding fuel to a longstanding debate over the origins of two endangered species.

The study is unlikely to impact the management of the endangered red wolf in North Carolina and the eastern Canadian wolf in Ontario, but it offers fresh insight into their genetic makeup and concludes that those wolves are hybrids that developed over the last few hundred years.

Some scientists have argued that the red wolf, Canis rufus, and the eastern Canadian wolf, Canis lycaon, evolved from an ancient eastern wolf species distinct from the larger gray wolf, Canis lupus, that is found in western North America.

Wolf experts who adhere to that theory say the new study is interesting but falls short of proving anything. They say it doesn't explain why hybrids appear only in some places and note that western wolves don't hybridize with coyotes but often kill them.

In the study, published online earlier this month in the peer-reviewed journal Genome Research, 16 researchers from around the globe led by Robert Wayne of the University of California-Los Angeles, used information from the dog genome – the animal's entire genetic code – to survey the genetic diversity in dogs, wolves and coyotes.

It was the most detailed genetic study of any wild vertebrate species to date, using molecular genetic techniques to look at over 48,000 markers throughout the full genome, said Roland Kays, curator of mammals at the New York State Museum and a co-author.

In a previous study of the dog genome published last year in the journal Nature, a Wayne-led international team of scientists reported that domestic dogs likely originated in the Middle East and shared more genetic similarity with Middle Eastern gray wolves than any other wolf population.

The recent study showed a gradient of hybridization in wolves.

In the West, wolves were pure wolf, while in the western Great Lakes, they averaged 85 percent wolf and 15 percent coyote. Wolves in Algonquin Park in eastern Ontario averaged 58 percent wolf.

The red wolf in North Carolina, which has been the subject of extensive preservation and restoration efforts, was found to be 24 percent wolf and 76 percent coyote.

Northeastern coyotes, which only colonized the region in the past 60 years, were found to be 82 percent coyote, 9 percent dog and 9 percent wolf.

In a study co-authored by Kays last year in the journal Biology Letters, museum specimens and genetic samples were used to show that coyotes migrating eastward bred with wolves to evolve into a larger form that has become the top predator in the Northeast, filling a niche left when native eastern wolves were hunted out of existence. The hybridization allowed coyotes to evolve from the scrawny mouse-eaters of western grasslands to robust deer-hunters in eastern forests.

The genetic techniques used in the recent study allowed researchers to estimate that hybridization, in most cases, happened when humans were hunting eastern wolves to extinction, Kays said.

"The few remaining animals could find no proper mates so took the best option they could get," Kays said.
L. David Mech, senior research scientist at the U.S. Geological Survey's Northern Prairie Research Center in St. Paul, Minn., and founder of the International Wolf Center in Ely, Minn., is skeptical of the theory that eastern wolves are hybrids.

"How do you reconcile this with the fact that gray wolves typically don't breed with coyotes, but kill them?" Mech said. "We have no records in the West of wolves hybridizing with coyotes, even in areas where single wolves looking for mates have dispersed into the middle of coyote country."

Mech also questioned whether the study tested enough Canadian and North Carolina wolves and whether those specimens were true representatives of those populations.

Although 48,000 genetic markers sounds like a lot, it's actually a relatively small part of the entire genetic code, Mech said. So the evidence of a unique eastern wolf ancestor could simply be in another part of the code that wasn't analyzed, he said.

Several researchers who consider the eastern wolf species separate from the gray wolf weighed in recently in an online discussion of the new study.

Brent Patterson, a genetics researcher at Trent University in Peterborough, Ontario, called the study "an important step forward." But until more samples are analyzed, the hypothesis that a North American wolf evolved independently from the gray wolf was still viable, he said.

"It's an academic issue," Mech said. "It's nice to know what the origins are from the standpoint of curiosity, but from a conservation standpoint, it shouldn't make any difference."

David Rabon, coordinator of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's Red Wolf Recovery Program in North Carolina, said the federal agency has taken the position that the red wolf is a unique species that warrants protection. The new study, while interesting, won't likely change management decisions, he said.
